About the Danish United Nation Association

The Danish UN Association is a membership organization that works to strengthen international cooperation, human rights, peace, and sustainable development. We bring together citizens, young people, experts, and organizations who call for a strong and effective United Nations and a rules-based world order.

We share knowledge about the UN’s work, develop educational programmes, organise debates, and facilitate dialogue on global issues across Denmark.

The history of the Danish United Nations Association

The UN Association has its roots in the Association for Denmark’s Neutralization, founded in 1882 by Danish Nobel Peace Prize laureate Frederik Bajer. In 1970, the UN Association was established through a merger of the Danish UN Association, the Danish Council for the United Nations, and Én Verden (One World).

Among the central figures in this process was Hermod Lannung, former national chair of One World.

Since its beginning, the UN Association has been a cross-political and educational organisation with a clear purpose: to strengthen interest in the UN, promote understanding of the shared responsibilities of the world’s nations, and work towards the realisation of the values on which the UN is built, human rights, peace, justice, cooperation, and sustainable development.

What is the Danish United Nations Association?

The UN Association is a membership organisation, independent of the United Nations, whose purpose is to strengthen interest in the UN and increase understanding of the mutual interdependence and shared responsibility of the world’s nations.

How to become a member

The UN Association is a voluntary organisation for anyone interested in multilateral cooperation and in supporting the United Nations.

We seek influence, engage in public debate, and collaborate with other Danish and international organisations on issues such as peace and conflict resolution, human rights, sustainable development, UN reform, and civil society participation in international processes. And you can be part of this work.

Through your membership, you support our efforts to ensure that Denmark lives up to its obligations through the UN and takes global responsibility. The more members we have, the stronger our voice.

You can choose to engage in our national political committees or participate in our local branches and networks across the country.

You can learn more about these activities under “Our Work” on the website, where you can also stay updated on developments in and around the UN.

You may also be interested in becoming active in our Educational School Service.

Thank you for supporting the UN Association through your membership.
